5 Comforting Touches to Add to Your Home This Fall

Oct 23, 2018

As summer slips into fall, the desire to slow down, curl up and slide comfortably into hibernation sets in. And with it comes the urge to transform our indoor spaces into cozy personal retreats. It’s usually at this time that that practical voice in our head pipes up and says, “How can I make my space cozy for fall with zero time and a limited budget?”

To that voice we say, “Keep it simple.”

A few little budget-friendly touches can go a long way to refresh the look and feel of any space (especially when you can re-purpose things you already own by getting inventive.)

Here’s some inspiration to help you prepare your home for the changing season with ease (and without breaking the bank.)

1. Load up on cozy accents

One of the best feelings this time of year is bundling up on the couch to read or catch up on Netflix. Accents like blankets and pillows are an easy way to add a dose of comfort and style to any space. They are also a great way to introduce different textures to a room. Velvety, chunky-knit throws you can snuggle up in; thick, deep-pile area rugs you can sink your toes into; even super soft facial tissue that’s kept within arm’s reach – it all adds dimension and interest to a room and can reinforce that cozy feeling that we crave this time of year.

2. Bring fall foliage indoors

Simple floral arrangements are a great way to add a pop of color to any space. You can also use simple, fresh greenery like eucalyptus for a clean look and subtle scent (it’s also great for stuffy noses). And pumpkins aren’t just for porches anymore! Place miniature pumpkins or gourds on tables, mantles or window ledges, or convert bigger ones into candle holders or vases by hollowing them out.

3. Keep cold-season essentials handy

Congestion, sore throats, runny noses, and dry skin are on the horizon. Be prepared and stay stylish by upgrading your functional supplies to ones with a bit more flair. Stash pretty facial tissue boxes, decorative lotion bottles, even cute little hand-painted dishes filled with lozenges around your home for easy access. You can also hang eucalyptus in your shower – it doubles as décor while also easing congestion!

4. Play with colors and patterns

This may be one of the easiest (and most affordable) ways to change up a room’s style – whether it’s done with paint, accent pieces, fabrics, or art. Fall colors (think reds, oranges, yellows and browns) instantly warm up a space, but you can also incorporate rich purples and deep blues for a more modern twist. And when it comes to patterns, don’t be afraid to mix and match. A curated look that reflects your home’s style is far more interesting than the ‘matchy-matchy’ rules of the past (and easier to implement, too!)

5. Create a sense of warmth (both physically and visually)

Cozy accents, heavier bedding, and warming colors are obvious here. But did you know lighting also plays a big part in a room’s coziness factor? Dimming overhead lighting or adding a few small table lamps in a room can make a big difference (even the types of bulbs you use – white light vs warm light – can have an impact). And let’s not forget the inviting and relaxing feeling that joins the soft, warm glow of candles. Try clustering them together on a gold-colored tray or plate or wrapping cinnamon sticks around the holders to create a space that feels absolutely toasty (even the IDEA of that one instantly warms you up inside.)

Tailor these suggestions to your style and budget, and you can create a space that’s easy to ‘fall’ in love with.
